Dr. Ijinu is an ethnopharmacologist with over 15 years of experience in natural product research. He earned his PhD in Biotechnology from the KSCSTE-Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (University of Kerala) and received the DST-SYST Young Scientist Fellowship for post-doctoral research. He trained in analytical chemistry and instrumentation under the CSIR-Integrated Skills India initiative and served/serving as an R&D consultant for companies and academic institutions. Dr. Ijinu focuses on validating traditional medicine at the ‘omics’ level by integrating advanced techniques with systems biology approaches to develop herbal drugs, nutraceuticals, and cosmeceuticals. He is committed to developing a unified protocol or methodology for the quality standardisation of traditional medicines, viewing it as both a challenge and an opportunity in the AI-driven technological era. Moreover, he is involved in an ongoing collaborative research project between DST-BSIP (India) and UChicago on the genetics of indigenous populations and their gut microbiomes. His research contributions include 34 peer-reviewed journal papers, 57 book chapters, 3 books, 19 popular articles, and one granted patent and one filed patent. He is currently editing a book on ‘Ethnobotany in India’ (Daya Publishing House, New Delhi) and ‘Handbook of Herbal Product Development: An Industrial Perspective’ (Springer Nature, Switzerland). He contributed to the IPR-protected traditional knowledge databases for CSIR and DST and digitised ten monographs for the National Medicinal Plant Board of India. He is a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London (FLS) and the National Society of Ethnopharmacology, India (FNSE), and a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC), the Royal Society of Biology (MRSB), and several other professional bodies. He also holds memberships in the IUCN-SSC, the Medicinal Plant Specialist Group (MPSG), and the Western Ghats Plant Specialist Group (WGPSG). In addition, Dr. Ijinu is a member of various esteemed scientific societies and serves as a Section Editor, Editorial Board Member, and Reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals. His research spans pharmacognosy, natural product innovation, gut microbiome, molecular nutrition and pharmacology, nutraceuticals, functional foods, cosmeceuticals, traditional knowledge, bioprospecting, IPR, and tribal welfare projects. He is currently the President of the Naturae Science Foundation (NSF), India, and General Secretary of the National Society of Ethnopharmacology (NSE), India.
